PELTOR ™ Värnamo is now part of the US 3M Group. PELTOR ™ is a trademark for a wide range of protective equipment for the head, face, and hearing as well as communication solutions for noisy environments. Manufacturing takes place in Värnamo, where 320 employees work in product lines. Ever since the start, there have been many incidents, including in connection with the staff being among the trucks on the floor.
– It made us worried and we started looking for a system to separate staff and trucks. We found A-safe – flexible protection barriers. But we also found BBS, Behavior-Based Safety, and Move Management, which proved to have the expertise we realized was needed for all employees at 3M PELTOR ™ Värnamo to believe in BBS, says Anders Persson, production manager EHS at 3M PELTOR Värnamo.
After deciding to move on with BBS and Move Management, Anders Persson was commissioned by the management to begin work. It began with the fact that Ulf Dennholt, BBS specialist and business area manager for BBS at Move Management, held a number of information meetings about BBS and how the process for the introduction of BBS was laid out.
– At the meetings, the management group and responsible leaders, including the protection organization, were present. Ulf Dennholt from Move helped us with the basic documents. We have had these as the basis for the continued work in Värmamo – over time they have been adapted a little, says Anders Persson.
The biggest challenges when implementing BBS?
Like many other companies that have introduced new processes, 3M PELTOR ™ Värnamo has experienced a bit of resistance to BBS in some departments. But it was before the practical work with BBS started. After a while, the vast majority of employees realized that it was worthwhile.
-The employees felt that the mood improved considerably and that the workplace became safer as the number of incidents decreased drastically. However, the potential risks increased some year before they began to decline. It was because we started to report more things. At present, everything is reported and all minor risks are eliminated immediately. Today, the BBS process is self-propelled by us in Värnamo – it seems the staff to is very positive, says Anders Persson.
How has the cooperation with Move Management worked?
According to Anders Persson, the collaboration with Move Management has felt right from the beginning and he feels that it has been easy to get in touch and the support he and his colleagues needed to achieve the goal of 70 safe behaviors.
-We have been able to call Ulf at Move Management at any time to get advice on the problems that appeared along the way. The advice and tips we have received have been what pushed the project to where we are today. It has been a perfect collaboration that led us to beat 70 safe behaviors with a lot. 2018, the plan is on 110 safe behaviors and we will achieve that, says Anders Persson.
The BBS project and its success have given rings on the water and Move Management now also has a BBS collaboration with 3M Speedglass Gagnef and 3M SlipNaxos Västervik. All 3M factories World Wide has since 2017 been commissioned to carry out BBS in its target board.
